LASIK FAQs

LASIK is a helpful procedure for many people who don't want to wear glasses or contacts anymore. However, not everyone is a good candidate for it, and it's important to know what the surgery entails before deciding if it's right for you. If you are interested in this eye surgery, contact Eye Care Center-Ballantyne for a professional assessment from one of our optometrists at our Charlotte office. Here are some frequently asked questions about LASIK and how we can help.

Who is a Good candidate for LASIK?

In general, LASIK candidates are required to be 18 years of age or older, have a stable eye prescription, have good eye health and good overall health to qualify for this surgery. Certain health and eye problems can preclude you from being a good candidate, such as diabetes or past eye surgeries and injuries. You also need a stable eye prescription history. Our eye doctors will provide a complete assessment of your medical history as well as examine your current eye health to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for LASIK.

Is LASIK safe?

While every surgery comes with its own risks of complications, LASIK is a time-tested surgery that has been done for many years. In fact, modern advancements in LASIK technology have made this procedure safer than ever. By choosing an experienced LASIK eye surgeon to perform the procedure, you maximize your chances of having a successful surgery. The only symptom you may experience is mild discomfort in the eyes for a day or two after surgery.

How long is the LASIK surgery recovery time?

Most people recover from LASIK right away and can resume normal activities by the next day. You'll also notice visual improvement results within 24 to 48 hours after your procedure, with further improvement to come over the next few months. If you're a swimmer or play contact sports, your optometry specialist may ask you to forego these activities for several weeks after your surgery to give your eyes a chance to fully heal. Otherwise, you can enjoy your newly improved vision to the full.
