What Is Myopia?
Myopia is a word that describes a vision deficit that causes light to shine in front of the retina rather than on it. Therefore, objects in the distance appear blurry. With this condition, the eye is longer than normal, thus causing the light to focus in the wrong area. Researchers aren't entirely certain about the cause but cite heredity as a leading factor. Environmental factors also seem to play a role, especially in those who have a predisposition to this condition.
Diagnosing Myopia in Children
The testing performed by our family eye doctors depends on your child's age. At any age, for instance, during a routine eye exam, the eye doctor will check to see your child's pupils respond to light. For younger children, the test may consist of looking at shapes, while older children will look at letters and need to read them.
Treatment
The treatment your child receives at our eye care center may consist of getting prescription glasses. Older children who have worn glasses may get contacts for vision correction. We will figure out the correct prescription through the diagnostic process and educate you and your child on how to properly care for the eyewear.
